State-of-the-Art Point of Sale Technology for a Leading-Edge Hospital
Northern Westchester Hospital (NWH) has been dedicated to providing exceptional healthcare to the northern Westchester community for 100 years. As a teaching hospital and nationally recognized leader for patient-centered care, NWH is committed to creating innovative programs and services that meet the needs of patients and their families.
One such program, Food Is Care in 2012 with the understanding that the connections between food and health care extend far beyond the nutritional aspects of one’s diet. Their goal: keep the food simple and healthy and give patients control of what they eat and when they eat it. This approach has revolutionized the way food is prepared in the hospital setting. With the adoption of the Food is Care ideology, NWH completely eliminated production batch cooking; meaning all meals are cooked to order. The hospital also has an onsite herb and perennial garden and sources 90 percent of its fruits and vegetables from local farmers.
This culture of healthy and simple food extends into the hospital’s cafeteria, with programs like the Healthy Plate Club designed to increase staff awareness of healthful choices and reward healthy eating habits. The cafeteria also offers nutritious “grab and go” choices and healthier drink options.
How Leebro POS Helps
In order to promote these healthy-eating programs among staff and visitors and make its award-winning dishes easier to purchase, the hospital needed to update its point of sale (POS) systems. NWH required POS systems flexible enough to use in its cafeteria, coffee shop, and gift shop that would allow patients’ families and hospital staff to use credit cards. And to make it even easier for hospital staff to pay for meals, NWH also sought to integrate employee RFID ID badges as a source of cashless payment. Now, the staff has the option of preloading their employee ID badges with a stored value of their choice, and they can simply tap their badges when they are ready to pay for their meals.
Leebro POS implemented four total POS systems for NWH: two in the cafeteria, one in the coffee shop, and one in the hospital gift shop. The POS systems are equipped with barcode scanners, weight scale integrations, RFID readers, and EMV terminals with technology capable of accepting Apple Pay, Android Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal. With these solutions in place, staff and visitors can pay for healthy meals quickly and easily with a payment method of their choice.
